Dustin Richard’s Race report from the JConcepts Clash

mini-IMG_2627Race Report from the J-Concepts Clash

Hosted

by Lake park and the Hurricane RC Crew in Lutz, Florida

Let’s see it’s snowing in Ohio and 25 degrees with 40 mile winds. Solution…Head 1,200 miles south to beautiful Lutz Florida and the beautiful and historic Lake Park Raceway hosted by the Hurricane RC Crew.

I left Ohio at 8PM on Wednesday and drove 16 hours through the night. Since it was raining when I arrived I knew there was no practicing so I headed to my hotel to get checked in. I then headed to the track and it was about 1PM on Thursday. With a steady all day rain I took shelter under the covered pits and decided to finish

mounting up some J-Concepts tires for the event. I also did a little wrenching doing the last of the little things to prepare for a big race. My cars were still in great shape from the week before being in Wisconsin for the OffRoad Champs. However, Gold to Orange Bar Codes can be a big change. As many of us wrenched and waited it soon became apparent that there would be no Thursday practice. At about 5PM many of us still at the track decided to head to dinner. It was nice to head to a restaurant and just hang out with the racers. Most big races the routine is to grab some food and head back to the hotel to glue tires, build shocks, ect.

So Friday AM came and the hotel was a bustle with racers checking the forecast and cramming their RC stuff into a rental car that is three sizes too small. The park opened at 8AM with many of the racers arriving promptly. We entered the facility to find the track crew hard at work. They did an amazing job taking the track that was underwater 12 hours before, and manicuring it to a world class level. Practice started and each group (electric and nitro) got 2 half hour sessions. These sessions were run in 5 minute intervals. With such little practice it was important to make the most out of what you got. After practice there were 2 rounds of qualifying.

On Saturday there were 2 rounds of qualifying that I was pretty happy with.

Sunday when the mains rolled around I was starting 5th on the grid in 4wd Mod and 9th on the grid in 2wd Mod A Main. When the dust had settled I was did not gain anything and did not lose anything and finished 5th in 4wd and 9th in 2wd

All and all it was a great race. I mean Florida in December… what could be better. With even more pro’s attending this race I think the event will continue to gain momentum and be even bigger next year.

I would like to thank the following people for their help. Without them my success would not come as easy.

J-Concepts: The DD’s and Bar Codes were great all weekend
Speed Passion: Great power that allowed me to dial in just the right amount for the changing conditionsAirtronics: Radio, servos, and relievers worked great and looked excellent while doing it

Wisconsin Off Road Championships

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

IMG_2068Man it is a busy season. With the holidays and 3 major races within a month and a half, it is a little crazy. First was the Wisconsin Offroad champs. This race was held at S&N Trackside Hobbies. As some of you might know this track is owned and operated by the industry icon Scotty Ernst.

I Left for the track Thurs night and pulled in to my hotel at 2:30AM. A grueling drive of eight hours with snow, sleet, and freezing rain mixed in. I slept fast in anticipation of the practice and the round of qualifying that was to come the next day.

Friday morning I headed down to breakfast to find all the fast guys preparing for the day’s events. Upon arriving to the track I found a great layout with excellent use of the small space. Although I should not have been surprised, this is always the way I have found Trackside. Practice went well and I was ready for the first round of qualifying at 7PM.

The 2 rounds of qualifying on Saturday went well with a 4 in 4wd mod and a 7 in 2wd mod for the round. However using the qual points system 2 great runs a needed to make the A Main. This meant that the “Last Chance” Qual on Sunday was needed for me to make the A Main.

After the Sunday qual I just barely made 10th in 4wd mod and was in the middle of the B in 2wd mod.

In the 4wd main I battled the entire time with Brandon Rohde and he ended up beating me giving me a 10th overall for the weekend. In 2wd it was a rough B main and I finished 5th in the B.

This event continues to grow every year with big name drivers like Chambers, Evans, Phend, Due, Cavalieri, and more in attendance. It may have something to do with the race being run by the world famous Scotty Ernst. It may be that I am a glutton for punishment as it seems to blizzard every year I travel to this race. Regaurdless The S&N Trackside Hobbies and Raceway Wisconsin OffRoad Championships is a big race, with big names, that is super fun, that everyone should attend.

I would like to thank the following people for their support that weekend.

J-Concepts: The gold bar codes were super hooked up all weekend.

Speed Passion: My Speed Passion speed controls and motors gave me great power all weekend.

Airtronics: No complaints in the control department. The servos and receivers performed flawlessly all weekend and the M11X looked sweet while doing it.

BC1 Graphics: Best makers of graphics in the industry. A custom shirt or car decals, they have you covered.

Luke Richards: Excellent help all weekend doing whatever needed done. I could not have done it without him.

JP Richards: Whatever I need he was there to help. Big thanks go out to him for the support.

LukeDawg Photography:  This guy gets all the shots from every race weekend. If you ever need a shot at the track, check him

Watch for the J-Concepts Clash Race report to follow soon.
See you at the races

Paul Bradby Wins at The Players-The Rematch

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

OOP_4960

Following the success of inaugural ‘The Players’ race in March this 2009, the entrepreneurial Worksop club were keen to return with a bigger and better event for the start of the 2009/10 indoor season, thus was born The Players, The Rematch.

The event this time around is run to a slightly different format; racing is open to 144 drivers (72 drivers in each class), who all compete in three rounds of qualifying, after which the top 24 drivers in each class will move into a seperate ‘Elite’ division and the remaining 48 in each class to the ‘open players’ event. This ‘cut’ would be decided by 3 rounds of conventional qualifying on Saturday morning, with the best 2 rounds to count. 2wd and 4wd races will be held on both days.

The players races (reedy) style means that every run is a race for position and points – 1 point for a first and so on. Each driver will have 6 races in each class with the best 4 scores to count.

The track build process started in the early hours of Friday morning, with many dedicated professional track builders dragging themselves out of bed before sunrise to prepare the venue for the arrival of eager racers.

Local hero James Helliwell had designed the track….READ MORE HERE ON oOple.

Part # – 0094

(Fits 1/16th Traxxas Slash)

I dare you.  The challenge everyone has faced including JConcepts.  JConcepts dares to be different with the latest introduction for the 1/16th Slash, the Dare body.  Cut through desert type terrain like never before with the latest style JConcepts has to offer.

The Dare is different and specifically designed for one of the hottest truck in R/C – the 1/16th Traxxas Slash.   As the saying goes, if it looks good, than it runs good.  Well JConcepts has taken that saying to higher ground with the Dare body.   Starting with the visor mock lights this truck appears to be headed in the right direction.  The Dare represents the latest in trends by offering a completely redesigned off-road truck body.  The cab, bed and fenders are all areas of focus on the Dare and without disappointment the new 1/16th Slash body slides into the front of the pack.   In addition, one of the highlights of the styling cues includes extra fender clearance to eliminate troublesome tire rubbing issues.

Everyone knows that the Slash is all about fun and the inevitable Dare from the competition.  Be the first, top off your Slash with the new body by JConcepts, I dare you.

Features:

  • Original JConcepts – Dare desert based styling
  • Off-road inspired body, cab and window design
  • Realistic visor mock lights with decals
  • Clear heavy-duty polycarbonate with protective film
  • Window masks and detailed decal sheet
  • Extra wheel well clearance for more consistent performance

2010 Colonels Classic sponsored by JConcepts

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

by Jason Ruona

I wanted to share some thoughts about an upcoming event, the 2010 Colonels Classic in Savannah, Georgia.   The Colonels Classic is an event inspired by Phil Hurd, one of the original presidents of the SCORE club in Savannah Georgia.   Since the mid 1990’s Phil Hurd raceway has been the host to many large events including the ROAR Nationals, Georgia State Championships, R/C Pro Series and Colonels Classic.    Lake Mayer Park is unique, family oriented and home to one of the most well known tracks on the east coast of the United States.

Available classes:

  • 1/8th buggy
  • 1/8th buggy sportsman
  • 1/8th truck
  • 1/8th truck sportsman
  • 1/10th short course truck

For more information please visit – www.philhurdraceway.com

About Phil Hurd Raceway –

Phil Hurd Raceway, located in Savannah’s Lake Mayer Community Park was created by U.S. Army Colonel Phillip S. Hurd. His love for Radio Controlled Cars inspired him to build a race track in 1985 and became the founding member and first President of our R/C Club Savannah Chatham Off-Road Racing Enthusiasts (SCORE). Today, Phil Hurd Raceway is the second oldest R/C racing facility in the United States (the oldest being located in New Jersey) and has been host to multiple ROAR National Races in 1991, 1992, and 1995. R.O.A.R. (Remotely Operated Auto Racers) is the National non-profit corporation organized to promote the sport of radio controlled model car racing. ROAR was originally organized in 1967, and has steadily grown and evolved as the sport has grown. The facility itself has been through many different layouts. One of the earliest layouts was formed using nothing more than old automobile tires that were either donated by auto garages and dealerships or just simply found on the side of the road. The layouts over the years have been as simple as a dirt oval, but sometimes as technical as a rollercoaster ride. But no matter the layout, the facility has always provided a good show for spectators and racers alike.

Lake Mayer Raceway was re-named Phil Hurd Raceway, in honor of the Colonel after he lost his life from lung cancer in 1999. SCORE over the years has continued to provide a family-oriented environment for racers and spectators alike for almost 25 years. Although the some of the faces have changed, the love for the sport is still as strong as ever.
